Topic 1: Introduction to Upwelling

Topic 2: Introduction to Ekman dynamic and ocean winds

Topic 3: Obtaining Ekman transport and upwelling index

Topic 4: Case study: Coastal upwelling

Topic 5: Creating data collection from the World Ocean Database (WOD)

Topic 6: Plotting WOD data collection using Ocean Data View

Topic 7: Profile and cross-section plot WOD data collection

Topic 8: Managing SST and chlorophyll-a satellite data

Topic 9: Exploring available online database presentation

Learning outcomes

 At the end of the course the learner should be able to:

  • Explore existing upwelling sites using available datasets and increase understanding of the physical-biological interaction dynamic of upwelling region
  • Construct integrated data gathering which involved filed data, satellite data, and wind data at any particular upwelling site
  • Conduct a simple analysis of the integrated data in determining the special characteristics of any particular upwelling site

Technical requirements:

  • know how to use Matlab or ArcGIS
  • proficiency to user personal computers with Windows or Mac
