On November 14, 2025, in a dignified and warm atmosphere, the Faculty of Physics – Engineering Physics at the University of Science, Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM), solemnly organized a special series of events to mark the 20th anniversary of the establishment and development of the Oceanography Program under the Department of Oceanology, Meteorology, and Hydrology. This occasion was not merely an opportunity to reflect on a proud two-decade journey; it also served as a prestigious academic forum and a moment to connect generations, affirming a strong commitment to the sustainable development of Marine and Atmospheric sciences in Vietnam for the future.

The event was honored by the presence of representatives from the VNU-HCM leadership, the Board of Rectors of the University of Science, professors, and international experts. It also saw a large reunion of generations of lecturers, scientists, alumni, and current students. Together, they created a comprehensive and colorful tapestry depicting a journey filled with effort, dedication, and success.
The Anniversary Ceremony served as the keynote event—the most poignant and emotional highlight of the series. The atmosphere of the ceremony was not only a place to summarize achievements but also a space where memories came alive, gratitude was expressed, and core values were reaffirmed.
Opening the program, delegates reminisced about the 20-year journey, from the early days of establishment, filled with myriad difficulties and challenges—when the staff consisted of only a small group of dedicated personnel—to the present day, where the Department of Oceanology, Meteorology, and Hydrology has become a leading reputable unit for training and research in the fields of oceanography, atmospheric sciences, and marine environment in Vietnam.
Speaking at the ceremony, Assoc. Prof. Tran Le Quan, Rector of the University, expressed his deep appreciation and acknowledged the tireless efforts of the Department’s faculty. He emphasized: “In the context of the country increasingly facing profound impacts from climate change, the role of Oceanography program has become more critical than ever in research, forecasting, and community service. The journey of the past 20 years is a testament to the persistent striving and strategic vision of generations of teachers and students.”
To honor these significant contributions, the University representative solemnly awarded a Certificate of Merit to the Department, recognizing outstanding achievements in education, scientific research, and community service. This stands as recognition for a diligent journey, confirming the Department’s pioneering stature within the University of Science.

One of the most moving moments of the ceremony was the “Tribute” segment dedicated to generations of lecturers—the teachers who laid the first bricks and devoted both their heart and intellect to building and developing the discipline. Their sincere sharing and memories of different developmental stages created a warm atmosphere, deeply embodying the tradition of “respecting teachers and morals,” as well as the cohesion, dedication, and spirit of constant innovation within the Department.
Continuing the flow of inheritance and development, an activity of deep humanistic significance was organized within the framework of the Anniversary: The Scholarship Award Ceremony for students. These valuable scholarships were contributed by businesses and the successful alumni community—those who have been and are continuing to pass the torch of passion for marine science across all regions of the country.
This activity is not only practical material support, encouraging students in difficult circumstances who always strive to excel in their studies and training, but on a deeper level, it is also a vivid symbol of solidarity and the tight bond between generations. It represents the recognition by the predecessors of the efforts of the successors and serves as a pledge to join hands in continuing to build and nurture high-quality human resources for the fields of oceanography, meteorology, and hydrology in the future. The image of business representatives and alumni awarding scholarships to students ignited faith and hope, affirming a cycle of giving and receiving, creating a solid community strength for the Department’s development.
