Between Thursday and Sunday (16 Nov. – 19 Nov. 2023), students from the University of Tasmania visited the many areas in the Mekong Delta region. They visited the diverse ecosystems and cultures (ancient and current) and enjoyed the variety of foods. Stops included the Tra Su melaleuca Forest, the Ba Chau Xu temple and the Oc Eo archeological site, the seat of the Funan Kingdom. They enjoyed visiting the Cai Rang floating market and traveling along the Tien River near the aquaculture sites.
Here are some thoughts from the students:
“The many branches of the river bought trade, culture and religion from across Asia. We were lucky enough to experience this in a fascinating mix of temples, friendly people and delicious food, including crab and coconut, that all rely on the river.”
“The first excursion required many early mornings in order for us to encounter various aspects of the Mekong Delta in four days. Aquaculture, agriculture, and livelihoods were explored – though what I found most fascinating was interacting with the locals who have inhabited these low-lying communities for millennia.”
